They anchor the bed, especially in larger bedrooms, and the soft landing is nice on those chilly mornings if you have wood or tile floors. Place the rug perpendicular under the bed with enough of the rug reaching out on the sides and in front to place your feet comfortably when getting out of bed or sitting at the foot. Bedroom rug size and placement should be planned around your bed.
The bed's footboard should sit on the rug, but the bed's headboard and side tables should not.
I also had to consider. If you're working with a large master bedroom, consider a rug size large enough to fit your bed and both nightstands when it's placed perpendicular to them. Basic bedroom essentials pretty much always include a bed, dresser, nightstand, and a rug. That's my ideal, anyway, although you may see it done other ways.
